Osmotic pressure by definition means the pressure required to stop the solvent (pure) completely from passing into a solution (impure) by osmosis through a semipermeable membrane. Osmotic pressure arises when a pure solvent is separated by a semipermeable membrane (which allows the solvent to move through it) from a solution containing a solute that is impermeable through the semipermeable membrane.
