The above equation expresses the energy of a particle in nth state which is confined in a 1D box ( a line ) of length L. At the two ends of this line ( at the ends of the 1D box) the potential is infinite. It is to be remembered that the ground state of the particle corresponds to n =1 and n cannot be zero. Further, n is a positive integer.
